Viral Marketing

The dictionary defines viral marketing as a marketing strategy that focuses on spreading information and opinions about a product or service from person to person, especially by using unconventional means such as the Internet or mail. Viral marketing has become an extremely popular for of advertising is todays society that revolves around the internet and social media. When a piece of viral marketing is sent out it goes from person to person but does not have to come from a person you know. With viral marketing people are being exposed to the media from connecting to things they like or for websites they frequently visit. Viral marketing's greatest feature is being able to reach a vast array of people. With traditional marketing you are limited to advertising that is right around the customers; A specific ad in a paper or a commercial on a channel that the customer watches. With viral marketing is can be sent out so fast and go through so many different people that it has a much further reach.

  1. I also think that it is important to mention that Viral Marketing has the ability to be shared through social media. Not just by "going viral". But, for example, if I see that one of my good friends, or someone in my family, has posted a video...I'm probably going to watch it. So it gets shared within groups of people as well and does have the ability to travel a lot more quickly.

  2. I agree that viral marketing is sent out really fast and gets to many different people. A lot of times people would only have access if they, by chance, see the ad or commercial. We know more people now check their social media accounts daily or whenever they get a notification. This means that you most definitely will get someone's attention. It's sneaky because it often pops up like a predator would and triggers our amygdala. This could mean that viral marketing actually increases our stress levels while simultaneously providing pleasure if there is a reward from watching. Hence why we like things that pop-up but only if they are good things, like notifications from friends but get stressed out when we get random notifications. Just a thought!

  3. Viral marketing is defiantly an interesting concept. The people you can reach is endless. If a company or organization works hard and gets very lucky they can go viral and the benefits for them are vast. However, seeing the pay off is so high for viral marketing and the cost is low because you don't have to pay much in distribution costs, the competition is extensive and actually going viral seems to be an exceedingly difficult task.

  4. I agree, with television advertising you are paying for a select number of viewers that will catch it right then whereas with viral, it has the opportunity to spread throughout the web for more and more viewers to watch.
